Skidmore Family 1902

Seventeen of the people in this photo, taken at the David A. Skidmore homestead in Sylvan, are now buried in the cemetery.

Historical Marker placed by Scott Skidmore

Donald Blackburn served as President of the Sylvan Cemetery Association and caretaker of the cemetery 32 years. The cemetery owes him a debt of gratitude for his long term commitment and service.

Veterans

There are veterans from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and II, Korean War and the Viet Nam War. We salute their service to their community and their country.

Here are two of the older markers in the cemetery. The first is a preacher dated 1871 and the second is a child dated 1874. In the older part of the cemetery there are bois d'arc markers and unmarked graves that could go back to the 1830's.

You will find some special markers like the one to the left which is a Woodmen. This marker is for Thomas E. Hancock. The Woodmen is a fraternal organization.

The Sylvan Cemetery Association was started in the early 1970's due to the condition of the cemetery. The first president Robert H. Alexander served until 1979. His son Bob served from his father's death until 1985. Donald Blackburn served from that date until 3/31/17. Lowell Gillie is the current president.
